Terms of service

StorySitting is operated by AMF LLC, Wilkinson, Indiana (“we,” “us”). By placing an order you agree to what’s written here. We’ve tried to write it in plain English rather than the usual wall of capital letters.

1. What the service is

You ask us to contact a person you name (the “storyteller” — usually your parent or grandparent). A recorded AI interviewer named Kaylie telephones them, identifies herself as a recorded AI, explains that you arranged it, and asks whether they would like to share stories from their life. If they agree, she interviews them by phone and we write those stories into a written chapter, which we send to you.

This is a hands-on service performed by a small team, largely by hand. It is not an app and not instant.

2. What you pay, and when

• $5 to start. Charged when you place the order. This pays for us to make the first call and ask. It is non-refundable — including when the storyteller declines, doesn’t answer, or can’t be reached. That is the risk you are knowingly buying for five dollars, and we say so plainly before you pay.
• $79 for their first call. Charged only after the storyteller has given their spoken agreement to take part and to be recorded. If they decline, this is never charged. It buys that whole conversation written up — in practice usually three or four chapters, though that depends on how much they choose to share.
• $79 for each further call you ask us to make.
• Printed hardcover, about $89 (optional, arranged on request once there are enough chapters to bind).

There is no subscription and nothing to cancel. Prices are in US dollars.

3. Saving your card

At checkout, Stripe saves your payment method so we can charge the amounts in section 2 without asking you to enter your card again. We authorize those charges only for the items listed above. We never see or store your full card number — Stripe does. You can ask us to remove your saved card at any time by emailing us; doing so simply means we can’t process further chapters until you provide one again.

4. Your promise to us about the phone number

When you place an order you confirm that you are authorized to arrange a call to the person and number you gave us, and that the number is correct. This matters: we are placing an automated-voice call to a real person on your say-so. Please don’t give us a number for someone who would not want to hear from us.

We place these calls at the times you indicate, during reasonable daytime hours.

5. Consent, and how we stop

• Kaylie identifies herself as a recorded AI interviewer, unprompted, at the start of the first call. She never claims to be a person or a family member.
• We ask for the storyteller’s spoken agreement to be recorded before recording an interview.
• If the storyteller declines, asks not to be called again, seems confused about what they are agreeing to, or becomes distressed, we stop. We do not try to persuade them, and we do not call back. We will tell you what happened.
• A request not to be called is permanent. We keep the minimum record needed to honor it.

6. What we promise, and what we don’t

We promise to make the call honestly, to write the chapter with real care, and to tell you the truth about how it went.

We can’t promise that a particular person will agree, will remember a particular story, will be easy to hear, or will produce a chapter of a particular length. Memory is not a product feature. If a call happens but the recording is unusable through a fault on our side, we will re-do it at no charge or refund the call fee — your choice.

7. Refunds

• The $5 start fee is non-refundable once we have made or attempted the call.
• A call fee is refunded on request if we fail to deliver your chapters, or if the failure is ours (section 6).
• If you simply don’t like the chapter, tell us — we’ll rewrite it once, and if it still isn’t right we’ll refund that call in full.

Email us and a human will read it.

8. Who owns the stories

The stories, recordings, transcripts and chapters belong to your family. We claim no ownership of them. We use them only to produce and deliver your book, and we do not sell them, publish them, or use them to train AI models. We will delete them on request (see Privacy).

Please keep in mind that the stories are the storyteller’s too. Treat what you receive with that in mind.

9. Acceptable use

Don’t use StorySitting to contact someone who has asked not to be contacted, to gather information about someone under false pretenses, for debt collection, marketing, investigation, or any purpose other than capturing a willing person’s own life stories. We will cancel and refund orders we believe are being used this way, and we may decline any order at our discretion.

10. The boring necessities

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana. To the extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us. Nothing here limits any right you have that can’t legally be limited.

We may update these terms; the date at the top will change and the current version always lives at this address. Material changes won’t apply retroactively to an order already placed.
